Leeds Discovery Centre

On the 9th of December some colleagues and I had the pleasure of visiting Leeds Discovery Centre.  It houses all the artifacts for the museums in and around Leeds.  We had a private tour from a fellow student who works there.  I saw it as an interesting day out and good resource and networking opportunity.

Before the flu descended upon me.....

and knocked me out for a week I posted my first reel onto instagram.  I'd been told that this was a great way to get more notice.  It worked, my account activity increased by 6355 percent and my reel had over 3000 views!  It was good to know that as I lay in my bed there was still interest in my account which is a valuable tool in the promotion of my work.
Emily Stubbs talk 31st November 2021 We had an informative talk from a ceramicist called Emily Stubbs this week.  She has quite a bit of industry experience and was happy to share.  She talked about making your 'bread and butter' pieces to keep a steady income coming in.  Connecting to other industry specialists in your field and the art field in general,  She also recommended good places to look for advice such as the Arts Council and New Designers.
Summative Evaluation Doing this blog has been such a great learning experience.  It encouraged me to go and seek industry professionals and after contacting a few I was lucky enough to strike gold with Julie Bailey.  In addition to all that I learn on my degree, my time with Julie is unique to what I am trying to do.  She's taken such an interest in getting me to discover my style and I'm now tentatively working on my designs for a collection.  I'm going to visit her again in January 2022.  Her continued support will be invaluable to my jewellery practice I feel. I will continue to work on my branding and logo. It's been great to have the time to really think about my logo and I worked on lots of different designs.  It made me realise the value of taking your time on designing and coming back to it over a period of time and letting it develop.  I intend to get the logo design I came up with produced into stickers to put on the jewellery that I will sell. I regularly g

Branding ideas

I've been thinking about branding ideas and came up with this sketch, playing around with my initials to create a logo.  It needs some work and some colour adding, but these are my initial ideas for a logo. 15th November 2021 This week my tutor helped me to develop my logo on photoshop.  I'm not sure about the name or colour and will work on them, but like the design.  The shape represents my initials RJM. I also worked on my Instagram account, updating things and making it into a professional account. 22nd November 2021 Having looked through several craft journals and visiting a jewellers exhibition at Salts mill in Saltaire, I realise that most jewellers just call themselves by their name.  As you can see from the above sketch my initial thoughts were to call my business RJM jewellery and then I thought I'd call it Bella (after my mum and because I love beauty).  However after this research I have decided to call it Rebecca Mihill jewellery.  I have booked a session wit

The Yorkshire Sculpture park and visiting Julie Bailey and my personal goals.

This is me - Rebecca Mihill at my work bench My goals By doing this blog I hope to achieve the following goals: -Make contact with a local jeweller and hopefully build a relationship with them in order to support me on my journey of setting up my own business. -See how an independent jeweller runs their practice: What do they make? How do they make it? How do they make a profit/living from it? -Along this journey compile questions that come up and seek answers. Yorkshire Sculpture Park 26th September 2021 The sculpture park is a fantastic place and I feel very lucky to have it in the north of England.  It is in this park that I learnt to appreciate sculpture; prior to that I naively thought that I didn't like sculpture.  I remember arriving at the park and seeing the large sculptures in and amongst the countryside, you could touch them (something I feel strongly about the right to do).  I suddenly felt that I got what they were all about.  Since then I try and visit at least once a
